THE READ

Most of the day's losses were already reflected in the opening price. Korean investors had to absorb the overnight U.S. shock all at once, without a chance to trade while it developed. Both intraday recovery attempts, around 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., stalled near 5,600. The index repeatedly held just above the -8% threshold in the morning before crossing it at 12:38 p.m.A fresh low after trading resumed suggests the selling was not yet exhausted. The next question is whether the 1.9% rebound from the low into the close can carry over to the next session.

OPEN · MORNING

-5.59%The Open: Sell-Side Sidecar at 9:07 a.m.

KOSPI opened at 5,673.01, rose to an early high of 5,751.45 (-4.28%), then retreated. A sell-side KOSPI sidecar at 9:07 a.m. suspended program sell orders for five minutes; KOSDAQ followed at 9:12 a.m.Around 10:15 a.m., the index was near 5,550, just above the circuit-breaker threshold of 5,528.

MIDDAY

12:38 p.m.: Circuit Breaker Halts Trading for 20 Minutes

After rebounding toward 5,600 around 11:15 a.m., KOSPI fell back near 5,540. Level-one circuit breakers were triggered in KOSDAQ at 12:23 p.m. (757.88, -8.01%) and KOSPI at 12:38 p.m. (5,528.05, -8.00%).Trading resumed around 1 p.m. following a 20-minute halt and a 10-minute period.

AFTERNOON

A New Low Around 2:50 p.m.; 5,550 Regained Before the Close

The index hovered around 5,510 immediately after reopening, traded near 5,580–5,590 between 1:20 and 2 p.m., then fell again to an intraday low of 5,450.81 (-9.29%)KOSPI recovered the 5,550 level around 3:15 p.m. and closed at 5,554.22. Turnover totaled KRW 26.8661tn, or 1.21 times the five-session average.

The line traces KOSPI's five-minute intraday path; horizontal positions reflect actual times. Only the open, high, low, close and circuit-breaker trigger are exact plotted values; other levels are approximate. The dashed line marks the -8% circuit-breaker threshold of 5,528.10, calculated from the previous close of 6,008.81. The shaded area covers the trading halt and call auction, when continuous trading was suspended. The previous close lies above the chart's displayed range.

U.S. Inflation, AI Debt Fears and a Concentrated Chip Market

Why Korean equities fell so sharply

IN PLAIN TERMSA hotter-than-expected U.S. inflation report raised concern about further U.S. rate hikes. At the same time, bond prices at a debt-funded AI data-center operator fell sharply, bringing the financing of AI infrastructure into question. U.S. chip stocks sold off overnight, and Korean chipmakers followed from the opening bell. Yet TSMC projected stronger fourth-quarter revenue, suggesting the day was less a clear signal of collapsing demand than a reassessment of the valuations attached to elevated expectations. Samsung Electronics and SK hynix account for roughly half KOSPI's market capitalization, so their losses had an outsized impact on the entire index.

Overnight in the U.S.: An Inflation Shock and AI Financing Worries

Inflation · U.S. September CPI rose 3.7% year on year (forecast 3.6%; August 3.4%) · rose 2.6% (forecast 2.5%) · Gasoline prices jumped 9.1% month on month · Futures-implied odds of an October rate hike rose from 22.1% the prior day to 51.5% immediately after the release, then eased into the 30% range later that dayAI financing · Shares in CoreWeave, which leases computing capacity from AI data centers, fell -15.46% · Yields on some of its bonds approached 15% · Debt-financed data-center projects came under scrutiny, weighing on AI and semiconductor valuations · The evidence points to financing concerns, not confirmed cancellations of capital spendingU.S. stocks · On October 14, the Nasdaq fell -1.88% · S&P500 -1.11% · The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell -4.30% · The Dow lost only -0.09%, highlighting the concentration of selling in AI and semiconductor sharesCounterpoint · In its earnings call, which began about 30 minutes before the Korean close, TSMC guided fourth-quarter revenue to $52.3bn–$54.3bn, approximately 14% above the third quarter and ahead of the market's $50.5bn estimate. CEO C.C. Wei said AI demand was “very robust” and that he saw no sign of slowing. In our reading, chip production expectations remained strong even as the financing of the infrastructure behind AI came under pressure. A outlook does not, however, guarantee demand for memory chips.

U.S. September CPI was released at 9:30 p.m. KST on October 14 · Headline CPI rose +0.6% month on month; core CPI rose +0.3% (forecast +0.2%) · The Federal Reserve's Beige Book described rising Middle East-driven oil costs spreading through supply chains
The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield touched 5.33% intraday but closed around 5.19%, down 0.03 percentage points from the previous day (market quotes). Rate expectations shifted after the CPI surprise, but longer-term yields gave back their gains. Financing and valuation pressures had a separate, larger impact on AI and semiconductor equities (Snowshagal interpretation). The dollar index reached 102.94 intraday, its highest level in 18 months.
Some CoreWeave bonds reportedly fell to around 80% of face value. This does not mean the company's overall borrowing cost reached 15%. Its chief executive called the market response irrational.
TSMC's fourth-quarter outlook · Gross margin 65%–67% · Operating margin 56.5%–58.5% · Assumed exchange rate TWD 31.8 per U.S. dollar · CEO C.C. Wei also suggested that AI demand could grow faster than previously anticipated

The market lost KRW 375.9tn in value today; about KRW 255tn, or 67.8%, came from these two companies.Share prices · Samsung Electronics -9.48% (KRW 210,000) · SK hynix -11.06% (KRW 1,262,000) · Samsung Electro-Mechanics -15.36% · SK Square -10.21% · Hanmi Semiconductor -11.63%Regional comparison · Japan's Nikkei 225 -4.90% · Taiwan's equity market -3.4% (reported) · Selling in semiconductor and AI shares affected markets across Asia, but KOSPI's decline exceeded those in Japan and TaiwanBrokerage view · Daishin Securities strategist Lee Kyung-min attributed the decline to high-rate pressure, doubts about the sustainability of AI investment, intensifying memory competition, foreign selling and imbalanced domestic flows. CXMT's October 13 server-DRAM plans pose a medium-term competitive risk, but product specifications and mass-production capacity have not been disclosed. Their role in further depressing already weak memory-stock valuations is Snowshagal's interpretation.
