Bargain Hunting, Profit-Taking After ASML, and CPI Caution

What drove the market today

THE SHORT VERSIONBuying returned to chip heavyweights after yesterday's steep losses, sending them sharply higher in the morning. Gains began to fade around midday, then disappeared as chip selling picked up after ASML reported record earnings and raised its annual outlook at 2 p.m. One interpretation: results were strong, but expectations had been stronger. Brokerages also cited thinning buyback support, continued foreign selling and caution ahead of tonight's U.S. inflation report.

The Morning Lift · Bargain Hunting After Tuesday's Selloff

Price action · Samsung Electronics gained over 4% intraday and SK hynix more than 3%. KOSPI was +2.57% around 9:30 a.m. Reports and brokerages attributed the rebound to bargain hunting after Tuesday’s -5.46% plunge.U.S. chip stocks were mixed on October 13 · Micron -3.62%; SK hynix -3.19%; Applied Materials -6.69%; Nvidia +0.97% · -0.23%. Yoo Ji-woong of Daol Investment & Securities expects AI-driven power demand to support ESS growth and battery-sector earnings to improve in earnest next year. Shipping shares drew support from Q3 earnings expectations and hopes of higher freight rates after reports of an attack on a vessel in the Strait of Hormuz.

The Afternoon Drag · ASML Beat Records, but Expectations Were Higher

Reported figures · Released at 2 p.m. Korea time. Q3 sales of €11.66bn set a quarterly record, up about 25% quarter over quarter. Net income of €4.96bn beat expectations. reached 57.5%, above management guidance. ASML raised its full-year sales guidance from €43bn–€45bn to €44bn–€45bn, lifting the lower bound. Q4 sales guidance was €14.2bn–€15.2bn.The revenue comparison depends on the consensus used. The figure was around 0.4% below the €11.71bn estimate cited in Korean reporting, but about 0.4% above one dollar-based market estimate. On either basis, sales were broadly in line.Management's view · CEO Christophe Fouquet said some customers were expressing interest in orders for delivery in 2029 and even 2030. His remarks suggested that expanding capacity by 30% in each of 2027 and 2028 might still fall short of demand. Why did stocks fall? · Lee Kyung-min of Daishin Securities saw profit-taking despite better-than-expected earnings and next-quarter guidance, given the high expectations already priced in. Seo Sang-young of Mirae Asset Securities argued this was less a warning of slowing equipment demand than a sign that improvement had not kept pace with elevated valuations. Lim Jung-eun of KB Securities likewise said profit-taking capped the sector's upside despite the earnings beat.Beyond Korea · Japan's Nikkei 225 also retreated as semiconductor shares weakened after the ASML release, having gained as much as +0.93% intraday before closing -0.05%. The reaction was not confined to Seoul.Market response · KOSPI’s gains faded rapidly after 2 p.m.; the index turned negative around 2:40 p.m. By the close, Semiconductor Top 15 finished -3.50% (0 gainers and 1 unchanged among 15). Selling intensified after the ASML release, but the entire day's decline cannot be attributed to that announcement alone.

ASML has not disclosed quarterly order intake since Q1 of this year. The useful measures this time were sales, profit and next-quarter guidance.

ASML shipped 113 new lithography systems versus 86 in the prior quarter and repurchased about €4.1bn of shares in Q3.
ASML's U.S.-listed ADR fell -1.86% during the regular session on October 13, ahead of the release. The shares entered earnings up roughly 60% year to date. U.S. commentary cited a valuation around 55 times earnings as a constraint on further gains.

What Held the Rally Back · Thin Buying Support and CPI Caution

Flows · Lee Jun-young of Eugene Investment & Securities argued that foreign selling and the winding down of buybacks had left Korean chip heavyweights with less buying support, while limited new cash inflows could make short-lived rebounds weaker. Daishin Securities estimated SK hynix's buyback would end around October 16. That said, KOSPI's 'other corporations' category was a net buyer today, according to reports.Brokerage interpretation · Lee Kyung-min of Daishin Securities cited rising oil prices, fading AI enthusiasm and caution ahead of U.S. CPI as factors behind foreign selling and the narrowing rally.U.S. September CPI is due at 9:30 p.m. Korea time tonight. Forecasts are above August's readings of 3.4% year on year for headline inflation and inflation of 2.4%. The release comes after Korea's close; only pre-release caution could have affected today's KOSPI session.Oil · WTI was $94.40 at 4 p.m. Korea time, more than $2 above the $92.28 reading at a similar time on October 13. But most of that increase occurred before the Korean open. Given the 2.6% morning rebound, oil alone is hard to treat as the immediate trigger for the afternoon reversal. It was one of several background factors cited by brokers.
