3.8% Growth FORECAST
But Spending LagsChip profits are poised to reach households through Q1 2027 bonuses

Bonus payouts are set to surge in early 2027.
The boost to consumption will depend less on the headline sum than on who receives it—and how it is paid.

The 3.8% figure is the 2026 growth forecast from Daishin Securities, Hyundai Motor Securities and iM Securities. The Bank of Korea (BOK) estimates combined cash-and-stock bonuses of about KRW 60 trillion for Samsung Electronics and SK hynix in Q1 2027. Payment schedules vary; Samsung's special bonus is expected in late March or early April.1, 2, 3, 4, 5

AT A GLANCEFIVE TAKEAWAYS

  1. 01Government spending and investment drove Q3 real growth. Private activity contributed just 0.2 percentage points of the 1.0% increase. Higher chip export prices lifted the economy's purchasing power (GDI) more than its physical output.
  2. 02Temporary factors played a major role in the consumption decline. Excluding passenger cars and financial services, spending rose 0.4%, according to the BOK. Limited hiring in chips, a stock-market correction and elevated interest rates may still slow the recovery.
  3. 03Early-2027 bonuses could approach KRW 60tn (BOK estimate). But under the agreed payout rules, more than half would be in shares, some not delivered or saleable for another one to two years. Samsung's special award will be paid in stock after tax withholding.
  4. 04Chip profits have already begun reaching households. Consumer spending in semiconductor-linked areas rose by as much as 4% relative to comparison areas, the BOK estimates. The issue is not that the money never arrived: its recipients and destinations remain concentrated.
  5. 05A stronger won offers a channel to households that receive no bonuses. Kiwoom Securities sees scope for USD/KRW to dip briefly below 1,300 in early 2027. The size and timing of any dollar conversion, however, depend on corporate treasury decisions.

After Q3 GDP expanded 1.0% quarter on quarter, beating the 0.7–0.8% consensus, several brokerages raised their full-year 2026 growth forecasts to 3.8%.1, 2, 6 Yet private consumption contracted 0.2% that same quarter. Why does strong headline growth feel so distant to households? And how much of a spending recovery might next year's semiconductor bonuses deliver?

01GAINNational income

The economy's income surged;
household spending did not keep pace

Real gross domestic income (GDI) climbed 18.8% year on year in Q3, its fastest increase since Q4 1977. Real private consumption, meanwhile, rose only 1.1% over the same period.3, 6 Rising semiconductor export prices improved Korea's terms of trade and sharply increased economy-wide purchasing power. That does not mean household income or spending rose at anything close to the same rate.

FIGURE 1

The Q3 divergence between income and consumption

Year-on-year change · real terms · BOK preliminary release

Sources: BOK (reported by Edaily, Oct. 27), iM Securities · Chart: Snowshagal

KEY CONCEPT · REAL GDIReal GDI measures the purchasing power of income generated within an economy. It adjusts real GDP for gains or losses arising from changes in export and import prices. When semiconductor export prices rise faster than import prices, purchasing power can grow far faster than output—even if shipment volumes do not change. It is not a direct measure of corporate cash holdings or households' disposable income.

What matters

  • In the Q2 income-distribution data (nominal, quarter on quarter), gross operating surplus rose 18.5%, while compensation of employees grew 1.9%.7 These are supporting figures measured on a different basis from the Q3 chart above (real, year on year).
  • Of Q3's 1.0% real growth, government activity contributed 0.8 percentage points and private activity just 0.2 points. In Q2 the pattern was reversed: +1.1 points from the private sector and −0.5 from government.6, 8
  • The BOK said corporate operating profits accelerated sharply from Q4 2025 and Q1 2026, but the benefits reach households only with a lag through wages, bonuses and dividends.2, 9

Part of the unusually large government contribution came from spending previously unspent first-half funds on major construction projects and GPU imports in Q3 (BOK explanation, as summarized by Hyundai Motor Securities).2

02DECLINEPrivate consumption

Why did consumption fall?
Temporary disruptions met longer-lasting headwinds

Q3 marked the first quarter-on-quarter decline in private consumption this year. The BOK pointed to an automotive strike and reduced equity trading. Excluding passenger cars and financial services, consumption would have risen 0.4%.8 Here, consumption of financial services means expenses such as brokerage commissions—not the money spent buying stocks. Even that adjusted 0.4% gain equates to only about 1.6% annualized, suggesting little improvement in underlying consumption since the start of the year (Daishin Securities).1

CYCLICALFactors that may reverse next quarter

  • Auto-sector strikes delayed vehicle sales
  • The stock-market pullback reduced trading activity and spending on financial services
  • Excluding cars and financial services, consumption increased 0.4% (BOK)8

STRUCTURALFactors that may weigh on recovery for longer

  • The semiconductor industry creates relatively few additional jobs (BOK)2
  • The negative wealth effect from falling equity prices weighs on household spending (Daishin / iM Securities)1, 3
  • High interest rates remain a burden3

A rise in economy-wide purchasing power does not translate one-for-one into household income and consumption. Even after temporary disruptions fade, the lag from corporate profits to households—and weaker equity wealth—could constrain the recovery.

The October Consumer Sentiment Index fell 1.2 points to 105.4, though it remains above its long-run benchmark of 100.6

03PAYOUT EST.Employee bonuses

Around KRW 60tn in early-2027 bonuses:
More than half in shares; some locked up for 1–2 years

Corporate profits are already finding their way to households. Bonuses paid in 2025 and early 2026 lifted spending in semiconductor-linked regions. According to the BOK, Samsung's cash dividends and corporate income-tax advance payments will also make the distribution of profits to households and government more visible in the second half of 2026.9, 10 The next transmission channel is early-2027 bonuses. The BOK estimates roughly KRW 60tn in Q1 payouts by Samsung Electronics and SK hynix, and KRW 60–70tn across major industries, including chips, autos and shipbuilding, in 2027—roughly six times this year's KRW 10.9tn.4, 11 The schedules differ. Samsung's special award is expected in late March to early April, following approval at its March annual general meeting.5

Breaking KRW 60tn into cash and shares

Illustrative allocation under the payout rules · fixed total of KRW 60tn · before tax · cash and shares (hatching: SK hynix shares delivered in one to two years)

The KRW 60tn BOK estimate is held fixed. SK hynix's share is calculated assuming Q4 operating profit matches Q3, and the residual is assigned to Samsung. See Methodology below · Chart: Snowshagal

What matters

  • This is a scenario illustrating payout form and timing, not a forecast of actual compensation. Pre-tax cash would be about KRW 17.4tn, while over 40% of the same KRW 60tn could not be received or sold until one or two years later.
  • Cash paid, assets immediately convertible into cash, and actual consumption are three different things. Stock compensation is not automatically excluded from spending, nor is every cash bonus spent.
  • The allocation is before tax. Samsung applies 49.5% withholding to special bonuses, deducts insurance contributions, then delivers the remainder in shares. Withholding is later reconciled through the annual tax settlement.5 The value of shares actually received—and the amount readily spendable—will be lower than the amounts shown.

The total will depend on Q4 earnings. Samsung's DS operating profit is due to be disclosed with its Oct. 29 results.

04SPENDINGConsumption spillovers

The spending effect is already visible,
but it is smaller—and more concentrated—than the payouts

Bonuses paid in 2025 and 2026 have already boosted spending. That is the conclusion of a BOK study comparing card spending in semiconductor-linked areas, including Icheon, Hwaseong and Cheongju, with other regions.10, 15

BOK Issue Note, “How Does the Semiconductor Boom Affect Consumption in Beneficiary Regions?” (Aug. 31) · Additional spending estimated relative to a no-bonus counterfactual

What the data already show

  • Spending rose first on big-ticket discretionary items such as cars, department-store goods, appliances and furniture. Everyday living costs, medical expenses and education showed no clear change.10
  • Larger bonuses did not produce a proportional increase in spending. The BOK attributes the declining share spent partly to the growing size of the awards.10
  • The response varied across regions. Icheon saw a smaller uplift than Cheongju, and some extra income may have flowed into assets such as housing in southern Gyeonggi Province.10
FIGURE 3

BOK estimates:
How much could these flows add to 2027 consumption growth?

BOK, “Assessing the Outlook for Private Consumption Recovery” (Oct. 22). The three monetary bases differ—gross bonus payouts, dividends accruing to households, and increases in government transfers—so the chart should not be used to calculate a comparable effect per won. Shading denotes ranges.

Sources: BOK (as reported by AsiaToday and iNews24) · Chart: Snowshagal

How to read these estimates

  • A gain of 0.10–0.15 percentage points would, all else equal, raise private-consumption growth from an illustrative 2.0% to 2.10–2.15%. It does not mean all bonus payments turn into spending.4
  • The BOK expects most bonus income to be saved initially and spent later. Household panel analysis suggests that an extra one-off KRW 1 million in income raises consumption by around KRW 110,000. This is a household-level response, not a multiplier to apply to the aggregate growth estimate above.16
  • Payouts accrue heavily to higher-income workers at large companies, so transmission to other households takes time. Although the estimated increase in government transfers is smaller than total bonuses, its effect on consumption is larger—consistent with differences in recipients' ability and willingness to spend.4, 16

Brokerage perspective

  • Citing the BOK, Daishin Securities expects real household labor-income growth of about 4% in 2027, compared with the usual 1%-plus pace. It identifies department stores as a principal beneficiary of bonus-driven spending alongside purchases by foreign visitors, while lower-priced discretionary categories may remain weak.17

The size of next year's transfer spending may change because the budget has not yet been finalized (BOK).4 A favorable demand channel does not necessarily mean further upside in the shares of companies exposed to it.

05FX CONVERSIONUSD/KRW

A stronger won offers a second transmission channel—
including to households that receive no bonuses

The chip boom can reach households without direct bonuses. If corporate dollar sales help strengthen the won and reduce the cost of imports, real purchasing power can improve even without a pay rise. Unlike bonuses concentrated among high-income employees of large firms, the BOK estimates that this channel could benefit lower-income households proportionately more.4

Kyobo Securities expects a Q2 2027 trough, then a rebound

Three brokerage views

  • Kiwoom Securities: Won demand linked to bonuses, corporate taxes and capex could briefly push USD/KRW below 1,300 in early 2027. In the second half, overseas investment by pension funds and individuals, plus companies' foreign-currency holdings, could drive a modest rebound.11
  • Kyobo Securities: Corporate income taxes, bonuses, dividends, treasury-share purchases and domestic capex at the two chipmakers could concentrate dollar-to-won conversion in H1 2027, producing a U-shaped path: a Q2 average of 1,280 and a Q4 average of 1,340.18
  • iM Securities: Expected USD/KRW range of 1,300–1,350 for Oct. 26–30. A more hawkish-than-expected FOMC would be an upside risk to the exchange rate.19

What matters

  • Bonuses, taxes and dividends may increase companies' need for won. Actual dollar sales and their timing, however, depend on existing KRW balances, funding choices and hedging arrangements. For equity-based bonuses, won is spent when the company buys treasury shares for employee awards; on Oct. 28, SK hynix approved KRW 10tn of treasury-share purchases for compensation.20
  • Companies with December fiscal year-ends must file and pay corporate income tax by the end of March, with qualifying installments due by the end of April.21 Early-year conversion forecasts therefore reflect taxes, dividends and capital expenditure as well as bonuses.18
  • One day's FX move cannot be explained by exporter dollar sales alone. USD/KRW closed at 1,337.7 on Oct. 28, up 14 won from 1,323.7 on Oct. 27 as traders positioned cautiously ahead of the FOMC.22, 23

The purchasing-power benefit of a stronger won is conditional. It does not imply an immediate rise in consumption for every household. The exchange-rate assumptions used in earnings estimates were covered in Investment Note No.16.

06RISKSAlternative scenarios

What could delay—or change—the conclusion?

SCENARIO 1Daishin Securities · Hanwha Investment & Securities

Consumption could rebound before bonuses are paid

Daishin argues that auto strikes and lower financial-services spending explain much of the decline, making a next-quarter rebound likely. Weekly card-spending data are already better than Q3's overall consumption reading.1 Hanwha attributes some weakness to the loss of household wealth after the prior quarter's KOSPI plunge. With real household income holding up, it expects steady consumption once near-term demand weakness subsides.24

IF SOMuch of Q3's weakness was temporary, and the first evidence should appear in Q4 consumption.
SCENARIO 2Hyundai Motor Securities · Daishin Securities

Higher rates erode spending capacity

Hyundai Motor Securities expects the BOK to raise its policy rate by 25 basis points each in November and Q1 2027, to a peak of 3.50%.2 Daishin warns that rising borrowing costs and a negative wealth effect from falling stocks may prevent a sustained improvement in household sentiment.1

IF SOEven when bonuses arrive, higher interest costs could offset part of the increase in spending capacity.
SCENARIO 3Profits and share prices

Neither the bonus pool nor the cash value realized is fixed

Bonus funding depends on earnings: annual operating profit at SK hynix and DS operating profit at Samsung. The amount employees ultimately realize from share awards depends on how share counts are set and the market price when they sell. A lower reference share price does not, by itself, necessarily reduce the bonus amount.

IF SOQ4 profits and share prices at the time of sale will shape how much money is actually available for spending next year.

If Scenario 1 proves right, recovery should precede bonus payments. If Scenarios 2 and 3 overlap, both the money reaching workers and the share ultimately spent may disappoint.

  • Scenario: ~KRW 35tn pre-tax available in payout year versus ~KRW 25tn available after 1–2 years (fixed KRW 60tn total)
  • USD/KRW may briefly dip below 1,300 in early 2027 (Kiwoom); Q2 average 1,280 (Kyobo)

UNKNOWNOpen questions

  • Will Q4 consumption rebound before bonuses are paid?
  • How will award share counts and sale dates be set, and will SK hynix's same-year shares face sale restrictions?
  • What will be the final scale of government transfers in the 2027 budget?
CLOSING · THE TAKEAWAYThe semiconductor boom is already reaching households. Larger bonuses in early 2027 should amplify that effect, but the headline payout is not the same as money spent. Awards are concentrated among employees of a handful of large companies, and stock delivery, lockups and saving decisions will determine when spending occurs. The first signal to watch is therefore not a broad consumption boom, but demand in semiconductor hubs and premium discretionary channels. A wider recovery will require improvement in employment, real incomes, government transfers and the burden of prices.

An analysis of public data and brokerage research · Not investment advice · Data cutoffs and calculations are documented in the sources below

METHODOLOGY · How we divided the KRW 60tn

Here is the approach. We hold the BOK's estimated KRW 60tn total constant, calculate SK hynix's share using its bonus formula, and allocate the remainder to Samsung. Raising the Q4 profit assumption for SK hynix therefore automatically reduces Samsung's residual in this illustration. The companies' actual bonus awards are not determined in this way.

SK hynix's profit-sharing bonus (PS) equals 10% of operating profit. Operating profit in Q1, Q2 and Q3 2026 was KRW 37.6103tn, KRW 60.5426tn and KRW 83.3338tn, respectively—a total of KRW 181.4867tn. Assuming Q4 matches Q3 yields annual operating profit of KRW 264.8205tn and PS of roughly KRW 26.5tn.20, 27, 28

Subtracting that from KRW 60tn leaves about KRW 33.5tn allocated to Samsung. Dividing that by 12% implies roughly KRW 279tn of DS operating profit—but that is merely a residual balancing figure, NOT an earnings forecast. We treat OPI (1.5%) as cash under existing arrangements and the special award (10.5%) as stock. The result is about KRW 4.2tn in cash and KRW 29.3tn in shares, with one-third of the shares saleable immediately, one-third after one year and one-third after two years (roughly KRW 9.8tn each).12

Under SK hynix's standard 50/50 split, cash and shares are approximately KRW 13.2tn each. Of total PS, 30% (around KRW 7.9tn) is delivered in the payout year, and 10% (approximately KRW 2.6tn) in each of the following two years.13, 14

Combined, that implies cash of about KRW 17.4tn (29%); Samsung shares saleable immediately of KRW 9.8tn (16%); SK hynix shares delivered in the payout year of KRW 7.9tn (13%); SK hynix shares delivered one to two years later of KRW 5.3tn (9%); and Samsung shares saleable after one to two years of KRW 19.6tn (33%). The portion receivable or saleable in the payout year is approximately KRW 35.2tn (59%), versus KRW 24.8tn (41%) after one to two years. Chart values are rounded to whole trillions.

In this scenario, more than half of compensation is in stock, assuming Samsung's special-award criteria are met and SK hynix retains its default 50/50 mix. If SK hynix Q4 operating profit reaches KRW 100tn, its allocation rises and the combined cash share moves to about 30%. All amounts are pre-tax. After Samsung's flat 49.5% withholding plus insurance and other deductions, the shares delivered at payment are worth less than half the gross special award; any withholding difference is reconciled at year-end tax settlement.5
