DAILY MARKET NOTE / 20 OCT 2026
AI Doubts Persist.
Two Days of Gains Erased.

The KOSPI (-3.73%) closed at 5,552.74. Its -0.60% opening print was the day’s high. The index gave back all 213.79 points gained on Oct. 16 and 19, slipping below its Oct. 15 close. The KOSDAQ (-3.33%) closed at 781.97.The U.S. semiconductor index (+1.61%) posted its first gain in nine sessions overnight, but gave back more than half its intraday advance. Treasury yields rose again, while concerns over AI financing and the durability of chip earnings remained unresolved.Defense was the hardest-hit sector. Hyundai Rotem’s third-quarter earnings decline and a series of broker price-target cuts sent Hyundai Rotem (-13.70%) and Hanwha Systems (-13.90%) sharply lower. Every constituent of the tracked shipbuilding and battery theme indices also fell.On the Korea Exchange's 3:38 p.m. tally, institutions sold a net ₩1.005tn and foreign investors ₩530bn; retail investors bought ₩898bn and other corporations ₩636.7bn. Just 13.1% of KOSPI stocks advanced.

Even as U.S. chip stocks posted their first gain in nine sessions, Korean shares fell across the board—including the sectors that led Monday's rebound. More than eight in ten KOSPI stocks declined.

-0.60% at the open proved the day's high. The close fell below Oct. 15.

Where the selling accelerated—and where it stopped

The KOSPI opened at 5,733.57 (-0.60%), also its intraday high. Losses deepened around 9:40 a.m.; the index reached roughly 5,550 by 10 a.m. and its low of 5,493.24 (-4.76%) around 10:15. It recovered toward 5,630 by about 11:15, then weakened again after noon. From 1 p.m. it traded largely between 5,520 and 5,540, before closing at 5,552.74—1.48 points below the Oct. 15 close of 5,554.22.

THE READ

The mirror image of Oct. 19, when the opening print was the low and the close the high. The U.S. chip rebound had no staying power even at the Korean open; most of the day's decline took shape within roughly the first hour (interpretation). Both rebound attempts stalled near 5,630. The afternoon did not revisit the session low, but buying was too weak to generate much recovery. Closing roughly where the two-day advance began describes the outcome; it does not establish support. The KOSDAQ followed a similar pattern, with its high near the open. Fewer than one in five stocks advanced in either market.

OPEN · MORNING

-0.60%Opening selloff; session low around 10:15 a.m.

Opened at 5,733.57, the day's high. Near 5,650 around 9:05 a.m., then broadly 5,620–5,645 through about 9:35.Selling resumed around 9:40 a.m., taking the index to roughly 5,550 by 10 a.m. and 5,493.24 (-4.76%) around 10:15.

MIDDAY

Rebounded toward 5,630 around 11:15 a.m., then turned lower

The index pared its losses from about 10:20 a.m., reaching the 5,610 area around 10:50. After slipping toward 5,580 around 11:05, it reached roughly 5,630 around 11:15.A second test of the 5,630 area around 11:55 failed. Selling resumed after noon, taking the index toward 5,560 around 12:50 p.m.

AFTERNOON

Mostly 5,520–5,540 after 1 p.m.; closed near the Oct. 15 level

Near 5,530 around 1:05 p.m., slipping into the 5,510s around 3:10, then recovering slightly into the close at 5,552.74.The KOSDAQ opened at 805.37 (-0.44%), peaked at 807.22, touched 773.32 and closed at 781.97. KOSPI turnover was ₩15.9997tn, 93% of Oct. 19's level and 0.72 times the previous five-session average.

AI Funding Doubts, Exporter Earnings and a Solidigm Listing Dispute Overwhelmed the U.S. Chip Rebound

Why Korea fell while U.S. semiconductors rose

IN PLAIN ENGLISHU.S. chip stocks finally rose after eight consecutive declines, but gave back more than half their intraday gain. Questions about the cost of AI investment and the sustainability of semiconductor profits persisted as Treasury yields climbed. In Korea, the won was at its strongest in two years, while earnings expectations for exporters—including defense, shipbuilding and autos—had been marked down. SK hynix also faced uncertainty over a potential U.S. listing of its subsidiary.

01

U.S. chips bounced, Treasury yields rose, and doubts about AI persisted

U.S. semiconductors · Oct. 19 U.S. session: The (+1.61%) closed at 11,316.34, its first gain in nine sessions. The intraday gain reached +3.71% intraday before fading into the close. Elsewhere: Nasdaq +1.11% and Dow -0.07%. AI data-center operator CoreWeave also gave back its early gains despite a Goldman Sachs rating upgrade; its return was -0.45% (reported).Korean semiconductors · Samsung Electronics -2.98%; SK hynix -4.23%. By comparison, SK hynix’s U.S.-traded posted a return of +4.67% on Oct. 19 (reported), while the Korean shares fell today.Broker commentary · Shinhan Securities strategist Noh Dong-gil noted that Samsung Electronics and SK hynix accounted for 62.9% of the MSCI Korea Index at end-September. Renewed chip concerns could therefore magnify losses in Korean equities, and he considered the recent foreign buying too modest to signal a trend reversal (reported). Daishin Securities' Lee Kyung-min argued that unresolved credit and profitability concerns around AI made a sustained rebound difficult.Rates and oil · The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield climbed to 5.15%, up 6bp from Oct. 16's 5.09% (U.S. Treasury). French 10-year yields reached 4.9%, up 12bp amid protests and fiscal uncertainty. After Houthi attacks on Saudi oil facilities, WTI stood at $103.66 (+2.22%). Mirae Asset Securities strategist Seo Sang-young cited French political and fiscal instability and Middle East geopolitical risk as factors behind bond and oil-market volatility (reported). The rise in U.S. yields cannot reliably be assigned to any single catalyst. How to read it · A rebound in chip shares does not mean AI-financing concerns have eased. Yields rose, and CoreWeave could not hold its advance even on a day of higher semiconductor stocks—leaving the cost of financing AI investment an open concern (interpretation).

U.S. stocks · S&P 500 +0.41%; Intel +2.36% (JPMorgan rating upgrade); Amazon +4.98%; VIX 18.43 (-7.80%) (NewsPim).
Trump's investment account · News1 reported at 9:50 a.m. KST on Oct. 20 that an Office of Government Ethics filing showed an account held in President Trump's name sold Micron and AMD in August and bought as much as $25m of Meta stock. Lee Kyung-min cited the report as a possible drag on AI-related investor sentiment.
200-day average · Kiwoom Securities strategist Han Ji-young put the KOSPI's 200-day moving average near 6,410, about 11% above its Oct. 19 close. MoneyToday suggested rebounds could draw selling from investors seeking to exit at breakeven. Kiwoom data put the KOSPI's forward 12-month P/E at 4.4x (MoneyToday).
Noh Dong-gil also suggested that more detailed shareholder-return plans from Samsung Electronics and SK hynix in late October could be a turning point (Special Times).

The won's strongest level in two years puts pressure on exporter earnings expectations

Foreign exchange · USD/KRW was ₩1,328.1 per dollar at 3:30 p.m., down ₩2.2. This was its lowest level since Oct. 2, 2024, and a third consecutive session setting a year-to-date low (reported). Despite roughly ₩500bn in net foreign equity selling, sustained dollar selling by exporters supported the won (reported).Exporters · Lee Kyung-min argued that USD/KRW’s slide into the ₩1,330 range had raised concern over exporters’ earnings, weighing on the group broadly (reported). Shipbuilding Top 10 -6.89%; Hyundai Motor -4.91%; Kia -3.10%. Defense · Expectations for third-quarter earnings were lowered because of the stronger won and delayed revenue recognition on export shipments, compounded by delays in new orders (Korea Economic Daily). Four major defense stocks suffered some of the session's deepest losses following Hyundai Rotem's results (see Section 06).What is established · The extent to which the exchange rate caused individual exporter losses remains a matter of broker interpretation. Food, real estate and high-dividend stocks, which are generally less directly exposed to exports, held up better on the same day.

SK hynix faces a fresh dispute over a potential Solidigm listing

What happened · At an Oct. 19 National Assembly audit, Financial Supervisory Service Governor Lee Chan-jin said both the Financial Services Commission and the FSS considered the proposed listing of SK hynix’s U.S. subsidiary Solidigm to be in conflict with restrictions on . Whether the proposed offering would require a Korean securities filing was awaiting an FSC interpretation (E Today). No listing date has been confirmed.Investor concern · A separately listed subsidiary could, critics argue, lead investors to discount the value attributable to existing SK hynix shareholders. That risk was cited as a drag on SK Group shares (reported). SK Square, SK hynix’s largest shareholder, -5.00%; SK Inc., the group’s holding company, -6.45%What is established · This concerns listing structure and shareholder value—not memory demand or chip earnings. The Invest Chosun report did not definitively identify it as the cause of the selloff. SK hynix rose 0.39% in Korea on Oct. 19, when the remarks were made. How much the debate contributed to today's decline is difficult to isolate.

Hyundai Rotem Misses Estimates as Defense Stocks Slide

HYUNDAI ROTEM · Q3 RESULTS RELEASED OCT. 19
-13.70%

Hyundai Rotem's Third-Quarter Operating Profit Falls 11% to ₩247.1bn

WHAT · THE REPORTED NUMBERS

Consolidated revenue was ₩1.6207tn (+0.1%), with operating profit of ₩247.1bn (-11%). The Defense, Robotics & Hydrogen division, which generates most of the company's profit, reported revenue of ₩841.2bn (-10.1%) and operating profit of ₩236bn (-10.5%). Rail revenue rose to ₩656.1bn (+21.4%). The stood at ₩29.142tn, down ₩1.2626tn from the end of Q2 (Aju Economy).

EXPECTATIONS · THE CONSENSUS COMPARISON

Operating profit missed market forecasts by 10.5%. Samsung Securities cut its share-price target from ₩250,000 to ₩156,000 to reflect delayed export orders and currency moves (Financial News). Shinhan Securities (₩230,000 → ₩150,000), iM Securities, SK Securities and Kiwoom Securities also cut their targets, citing delays in new overseas defense orders and lower earnings forecasts for 2027 (NewsTNT).

IMPACT · WHAT IT MEANS FOR THE BUSINESS (INTERPRETATION)

Total revenue was roughly flat year on year. An approximately ₩116bn increase in rail sales offset an estimated ₩95bn decrease in Defense, Robotics & Hydrogen sales and a decline in plant revenue (Snowshagal calculation from reported growth rates). Profitability is the pressure point: Defense, Robotics & Hydrogen, responsible for about 95% of operating profit, earned 10.5% less, while rail profit also declined. The smaller backlog adds uncertainty over when earnings can recover without confirmed new export orders, weighing on the near-term share-price outlook.

MARKET · HOW STOCKS RESPONDED

The results came during the Oct. 19 regular session, when Hyundai Rotem posted a return of +3.92%. On Oct. 20, after brokers cut price targets and earnings forecasts, it closed at ₩86,900 (-13.70%). The entire drop cannot be attributed solely to that one earnings release. Hanwha Systems -13.90%; Hanwha Aerospace -11.71%; LIG Defense & Aerospace -8.21%. The four companies shed about ₩10.2tn in combined market value from an Oct. 19 base of roughly ₩86.3tn, measured at the close (Snowshagal calculation). Foreign and institutional investors were net sellers of all four, while retail investors bought net (3:51 p.m. capture). U.S. defense stocks also weakened on Oct. 19 amid concern that defense-budget increases could face obstacles after the November midterm elections (Northrop Grumman -1.77%; Financial News).

Rail operating profit ₩5.9bn (-16.9%). Plant revenue ₩123.4bn (-13.6%), operating profit ₩5.2bn (-24.6%). End-Q3 order backlog: Rail ₩19.031tn; Defense, Robotics & Hydrogen ₩9.5228tn; Plant ₩588.2bn (Aju Economy).
The four companies' intraday market-cap decline was ₩10.5978tn, based on a Korea Economic Daily report at 2:57 p.m. The closing-basis estimate was calculated from that report's Oct. 19 market values and the companies' individual closing prices.
Related disclosures · On the morning of Oct. 19, Hyundai Rotem announced it would acquire Hyundai Wia's defense-related Special Business division for ₩358.386bn, with a planned completion date of March 31, 2027, to consolidate defense manufacturing and diversify operations. After the market close the same day, it approved buying 175,467 treasury shares (about ₩17bn) on the market for employee performance awards, with purchases scheduled Oct. 20–Nov. 20. Both announcements concern future business structure and potential flows; neither immediately offsets the quarterly profit decline or delayed new orders (interpretation).
Retail net purchases across four defense names · Hanwha Aerospace +₩48.7bn; Hanwha Systems +₩44.2bn; Hyundai Rotem +₩35bn; LIG Defense & Aerospace +₩5.7bn (3:51 p.m. capture).
