SUMMARY · Five key points
- KRW 100tn is the estimated shareholder return for FY2026—not a new buyback order. It includes KRW 40tn of completed buybacks and KRW 14.6tn of Q1–Q3 dividends.
- Only KRW 20tn of new shares are slated for open-market purchase over the next three months. An even split over 63 trading sessions implies about KRW 317.6bn per day, one-third of the prior round's actual KRW 975.7bn daily average.
- KRW 10tn of that KRW 20tn is earmarked for employees and excluded from the KRW 100tn return figure. Some of those shares could eventually be sold into the market, but neither the delivery date nor the quantity to be delivered is set.
- Corporate buying resumed after a five-trading-day pause. The initial application was for 250,000 shares, fewer than 40% of the previous round's 650,000-share opening application.
- The remaining roughly KRW 35tn is an estimate needed to reach the KRW 100tn target. Final-dividend and additional buyback amounts will be decided at subsequent quarterly board meetings.
After SK hynix announced an expected FY2026 shareholder return of roughly KRW 100tn, Daishin Securities argued that the program should strengthen the stock's “downside support,”1 while Kiwoom Securities anticipated a “stabilizing effect on supply and demand” in South Korean equities.2 KRW 100tn is 2.6 times the South Korean market's average daily trading value through the fourth week of October (KRW 38.7tn).3 But will all that money buy shares in the market from here? And will every share the company buys be retired?
KRW 100tn covers an entire fiscal year—
including KRW 40tn of buybacks already completed
The roughly KRW 100tn disclosed on October 28 is SK hynix's estimated total shareholder return for FY2026. It comprises at least KRW 30tn in cash dividends and at least KRW 60tn in share repurchases and cancellations. The latter includes KRW 40tn authorized in August and already purchased. Shares bought for employee compensation are excluded.4

What matters
- Roughly 40% of the KRW 100tn has already been deployed. That includes the KRW 40tn of shares bought daily from August through October 21, as well as first-half dividends.5, 6
- The KRW 14.1tn Q3 dividend goes to shareholders in cash. Whether recipients reinvest it is their choice; a cash dividend is not equivalent to the company purchasing shares.6
- The remaining ~KRW 35tn is not an approved budget; it is an estimate of what would fill the target. To reach at least KRW 30tn in dividends, the final dividend must be at least KRW 15.4tn. To reach at least KRW 60tn in repurchases and cancellations, another KRW 10tn or more must be bought. The last ~KRW 10tn is simply the gap between the approximately KRW 100tn total target and its KRW 90tn in specified minimum components; its allocation is not decided. SK hynix has said it will add the remaining Kioxia investment proceeds to the final dividend as a special payout, with the board deciding repurchase amounts quarterly.4

Spread KRW 20tn evenly across three months,
and daily buying is only one-third of the previous round
SK hynix plans to purchase KRW 20tn of shares on the open market between October 29 and January 28, a span of 63 trading sessions. Its previous KRW 40tn program was originally set to run for three months but finished after just 41 sessions—an actual daily average of about KRW 975.7bn.5, 7

What matters
- The first-day application slightly exceeded the evenly spread pace. At the previous close, 250,000 shares are worth about KRW 371.8bn, 17% above the KRW 317.6bn even-allocation figure. The prior round opened with 650,000 shares.5, 11
- SK hynix controls the pace. Buying roughly KRW 1tn a day, as in the previous round, would exhaust the program in about 21 trading days—around November 26. The company has not committed to a daily schedule. Each day's requested share count appears the previous evening in Korea Exchange treasury-share trading applications.7, 12
- Lower volume makes each share purchased matter more. Average daily volume in the month before approval fell about 40%, from roughly 5.73m shares in August to 3.46m in October. Although the daily buying value would be only one-third of the previous program, its estimated volume share of 7% would still be roughly two-thirds of the prior 10%.7, 13
For context, the evenly allocated daily amount would equal about 0.8% of South Korean equities' average daily trading value through the fourth week of October (KRW 38.7tn). The previous program's actual daily average was about 2.4% of September's average daily trading value (KRW 40.1tn), based on Kiwoom Securities data.3
Half the KRW 20tn is earmarked for employees.
The shares are bought now, but delivery and possible selling remain unknown
SK hynix said approximately KRW 10tn of the KRW 20tn program would fund “share-based compensation, including employee bonuses.”7 As discussed in Note 18, its profit-sharing bonus (PS) pool equals 10% of operating profit, with half normally paid in shares.14, 15 The repurchase plan is firm. What remains unsettled is when employees will receive the shares, how many they will receive and how many, if any, they will sell.

How the profit-sharing shares will be paid
- Payment structure · Under the agreed base structure, employees receive 50% of their bonus in cash, 30% in shares in the payment year, and the remaining 20% in deferred shares—10% after one year and 10% after two. Employees can elect to receive up to 100% in shares.15
- Potential size · Under the conditional scenario in Note 18, the share component would total roughly KRW 13.2tn. The actual amount depends on Q4 results and employees' elections to take shares (calculation in the expandable section below).15, 16
- Timing · SK hynix has not announced dates or volumes for the new share awards. On February 5 this year, it delivered 410,807 treasury shares (worth about KRW 345.9bn) to employees. But that was under the former voluntary Shareholder Participation Program, which allowed employees to elect shares for part of their bonus—not the new collective bargaining arrangement.9, 17
No publicly confirmed selling restriction applies to shares delivered in the payment year. An August report on the initial tentative agreement said those shares could be sold within the same year; a September report on the ratified terms did not address that point. Under the old program, employees who held their shares for at least one year received an extra cash payment worth 15% of the purchase amount.14, 15, 18
Calculation · Estimated KRW 13.2tn profit-sharing share allocation
This is the same conditional scenario as in Note 18. Q1–Q3 operating profit totaled KRW 181.5tn (37.6 + 60.5 + 83.3tn). If Q4 matches Q3's KRW 83.3tn, full-year operating profit would be roughly KRW 264.8tn, producing a bonus pool of around KRW 26.5tn at 10%. Allocating half of that pool to stock under the base terms gives about KRW 13.2tn: roughly KRW 7.9tn for shares payable in the bonus year (30% of the total bonus), and KRW 5.3tn deferred for one or two years (20%).14, 15, 16
Actual payments depend on Q4 earnings, award conditions and employee elections. SK hynix has also said the approximately KRW 10tn of shares earmarked for compensation “may change as the amount of future compensation is finalized.”7
Buybacks paused for five trading days.
The stock fell—and then recovered
From Note 04 through Note 17, we tracked the wind-down of the company purchases that had helped absorb selling pressure. The new KRW 20tn plan brings that buyer back. But the stock was not uniformly weak during the five trading days when the company was absent.

Reading the sequence
- The stock fell 5.5% on the first day of the gap. But by October 27, the day before the board's decision, it was 3.6% above its October 21 close, the last day of the previous buyback.7, 21, 22
- The biggest gain came on earnings and shareholder-return announcement day. The company responded to October 26 reports of a special dividend by saying it would announce details on October 28. On that day SK hynix rose 10.9%, but the KOSPI also gained 6.6% and Samsung Electronics rose 9.0%: the broader market was strong too.1, 19, 23
- Corporate buybacks are only one force among several. The stock ultimately rose even during the five-session absence of company buying. The KRW 20tn plan alone cannot determine its direction; the daily purchase pace must be weighed against wider market conditions.
Pace, price and late January:
Three variables that shape daily demand
If repurchases are front-loaded
Buying around KRW 1tn per session, as before, would finish the plan around late November. Support would be more concentrated, but absent a fresh authorization, another gap would open in December–January.
Daily treasury-share purchase applicationsIf the share price rises
With a fixed budget, a higher share price means fewer shares purchased. The 14.92m shares planned using the pre-approval closing price translate to about 13.11m at the October 29 close.
Average purchase price · Final repurchase reportIf events converge in late January
The scheduled buyback end (January 28) sits close to the expected Q4 results board meeting that could set the final dividend and further repurchases (held January 28 this year). If bonus shares are delivered around the same time as this year, new purchases and shares becoming available to employees could coincide.
Q4 results board meeting · Treasury-share disposal filingThese three variables affect actual daily buying pressure, how many shares are cancelled, and when the next gap in company demand could appear. The announced purchase budget is approximately KRW 20tn; the daily applications will show when that buying is concentrated.

Terms · GLOSSARY
- Share cancellation (retirement)
- The company permanently retires treasury shares, reducing the number of issued shares. Those shares cannot return to the market. Cancellation does not guarantee a higher share price.
- Share-based compensation
- Employee awards delivered in the company's shares rather than cash. In this case, SK hynix transfers repurchased treasury shares into employee accounts.
- Profit-sharing bonus (PS)
- SK hynix's profit-sharing award, funded with 10% of operating profit and normally paid early the following year.
- Fiscal-year shareholder returns
- The sum of cash dividends and repurchases/cancellations attributed to a year's results. Implementation may extend into the following year, including payment of the final dividend.
- Dividend record date
- The date used to determine entitled shareholders. Under the T+2 settlement cycle described here, investors must buy two trading days before the record date.
- Daily buyback order limit
- Maximum shares the company may order on a given day. Under the stated rule, it is the larger of 10% of the planned repurchase quantity and 25% of the preceding month's average daily trading volume, subject to a 1% cap on shares issued.
- Treasury-share purchase application
- The share quantity submitted to the exchange the preceding day for proposed open-market purchases. Korea Exchange publishes applications each evening; executed quantities are confirmed in the company's repurchase results report.
